This semi-detached home in the small town of Sheffield required a ground floor layout plan that suited the needs of a young family. The existing space comprises of a large living and an open plan dining/kitchen. The clients wanted to achieve a space that worked better for them and allowing the child to play from within his designated area. Using the existing garage by making it apart of the living space was also a major point along with a new w/c as the couple’s budget didn’t allow for a large extension.
The final design starts with the front elevation, the existing arched opening is replaced with a circular stained-glass window. The geometry from the arch is taken and used throughout the design as the main feature. Entering the house, you a greeted by the study/utility room. Walking through, you enter the open plan dining/kitchen/living and play area. The open plan allows the mother to keep an eye of her child. The play area is sectioned off with a climbing frame. This allows the spaces to be separated whilst changing the functionality of it.
The three existing openings at the back of the house allowed us to play with the geometry of arches to keep in theme with the rest of the house. Through the central doors lies a seating area with creepers to give shading. The playroom has its entrance to the garden giving the child responsibility and a sense of authority.
The design is finished with all internal opening being turned into arches and framed with timber. The arch splitting the living room for the house gives the client a sense of separation whilst it being open plan.
